| | | | Creator: | Johnson Family | | | | Dates: | 1811-1977 | | | | Abstract: | John Cumming Johnson (1828-1892) moved to Memphis, Tennessee, from Franklin, Ohio, in 1854. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher (1834-1883). They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson (1870-1958), were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Company and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey (1870-1930). Their son, William Cumming Johnson, Jr. (born 1904), married a great-granddaughter of Noah Mayo Farrin and Agnes Saline Faris Farrin. The collection consists of diaries of John and Elizabeth Johnson, correspondence of the Farrin and Johnson families, genealogical material on the Johnson, Fisher, Plume, Van Wagenen, Schenck, and Brown families, two memory books of William Johnson, Jr., an index to the memory books of Evangeline Johnson, and miscellaneous documents including clippings, estate papers of John and William Johnson, memorials for John and Elizabeth Johnson, and a key to the family code. Of particular interest to the Foundation are new teaching methods and education for disadvantaged people. The arts, civic affairs, economic development, the environment, and human services are also priorities of the Foundation. Abortion rights, women's issues, handgun control, homelessness, equal housing, museum development, retinitis pigmentosa research, AIDS public policy and education, community gardening, historic preservation, population control, family planning, and nuclear weapons control are also areas supported by the Foundation. | | | | Creator: | American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, Cleveland Chapter | | | | Dates: | 1958-1978 | | | | Abstract: | The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin and a group of associates formerly of the National Civil Liberties Bureau. The Cleveland, Ohio, chapter of the union was founded in 1922 and remained active throughout the 1920s and 1930s focusing on cases concerning unionization, Communism, and religious freedom. The chapter closed during World War II, but was revived in 1950 with the advent of McCarthyism. In 1954, the national ACLU recognized the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio as the official affiliate responsible for helping local Ohio chapters coordinate more easily on larger statewide cases and issues. The Cleveland chapter continued to struggle with budget woes and lack of membership following its revival. In the 1950s and 1960s the chapter focused its efforts on political rights; in the 1960s and 1970s the group became concerned with the rights of educators, students, prisoners, the mentally ill, and women. Among other initiatives, the Cleveland chapter completed an extensive court observation project of the Cuyahoga County justice system and helped to raise money for the legal defense funds of those indicted in the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970. | | | | Creator: | Moresky, Lana | | | | Dates: | 1952-1988 | | | | Abstract: | Lana Moresky is a women's rights activist and officer of the National Organization for Women (NOW). In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. The collection includes personal files, consisting of resumes, calendars, correspondence, speeches and files re: fundraising and public relations; NOW files, consisting of local chapter files, Ohio NOW files, national NOW files, NOW ERA campaign files (hearings, press clippings and state campaign notebooks), and NOW publications; and, files pertaining to general women's issues, and events and organizations (such as abortion, day care, education, employment, International Women's Year, the Twenty-Second District Caucus, the Democratic National Conventions of 1980 and 1984).
